Vernon, NY (WIBX) - Two Oneida County Legislators are asking the state Racing and Wagering Board to take a closer look before allowing video lottery terminals in Onondaga County.

Legislators Michael Hennessy and Frank Tallarino say this new facility would be just 40 miles away from Vernon Downs.

"It's too close of a proximity between the two," Hennessy said. "Not only would it hurt Vernon Downs but it would hurt Finger Lakes and have some impact on Tioga Downs."

Jeff Gural, chairman of American Racing and Entertainment which owns Vernon Downs, recently told the Oneida Daily Dispatch that he didn't think the project would be approved, but said if it was, it would spell the end of Vernon Downs.

Reports indicate the application is for harness horse racing and VLT's near the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, although an exact location is not known.

Hennessy and Tallarino are requesting a meeting with racing and wagering officials to discuss their concerns.
