New York Buys 1,114 Acres In Hudson Valley For Preservation

STOCKPORT, N.Y. (AP) — New York officials have purchased 1,114 acres of land in Columbia County in eastern New York for $6.7 million.

The purchase includes 590 acres along the Hudson River in the town of Stockport, south of Albany, and 524 acres in New Lebanon.

Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the acquisitions on Monday at an Earth Day event.

The 590-acre tract along the river has been designated the Charles Flood Wildlife Management Area at the Empire Brickyard. It was purchased from Scenic Hudson. The tract includes scenic vistas with more than two miles of frontage along the Hudson River and state Route 9J.

The 524-acre tract doubles the size of the state's Hand Hollow State Forest. It was purchased from the Open Space Institute.
