The New York State Canal System generates over $6 billion annually in non-tourism activity across the state.

That's according to a new study commissioned by the State Canal Corporation.

The study details uses such as renewable power generated by 27 hydroelectric facilities located along the canal system.

It also found that the canals support over 26,000 jobs and generates hundreds of millions in tax revenue.

Governor Andrew Cuomo calls the canals a rich part of New York's heritage and an important economic resource.
