EAST DURHAM, N.Y. (AP) — Investigators are working to determine what caused a fire that killed three children and their grandparents in New York's Catskills region.

The Times Union says the house fire Monday in East Durham claimed the lives of Nicholas and Mary Mammano and their grandchildren, all under the age of 12.

The children's father was critically injured. The family says he's expected to survive.

Justin LaSasso was driving by when he saw the fire, pulled over and called 911. LaSasso says the flames were so intense he could feel the heat through his car window.
