ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A new report finds that New York state leads in the nation in nonprofit jobs and organizations.

The analysis released Wednesday by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli reveals that 1.3 million New Yorkers work for charities, health care organizations, educational institutions or other nonprofits. That's nearly 20 percent of the state's overall private-sector employment.

The state also has the highest number of nonprofits, with more than 31,000 such organizations around the state.

DiNapoli, a Democrat, says nonprofits play a vital social role by helping New Yorkers in a variety of ways such as housing the homeless, helping the poor or advocating for vulnerable citizens. He says his report shows they also play a big role in the state economy by employing so many.
