WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a 72-year-old Long Island man has lost part of his leg after it got caught in a wood chipper he was operating.

Suffolk County police say Robert Fischer was using a wood chipper outside his West Babylon home around noon Sunday when his leg got caught in the machine. Officers say his son was able to free his father from the machinery but the elder man suffered a partial leg amputation.

He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Information on his condition hasn't been released.

Police say the wood chipper was impounded for a safety check and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified.
