BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A former student at Buffalo State College has been sentenced to six years in prison for using a box cutter to slash another student during a fight last year.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says 23-year-old Mohamed Kaba of Yonkers was also sentenced Monday to three years' post-release supervision for the September 2015 attack that left Tyrell Ganey of Queens with numerous scars.

Prosecutors say Kaba started a fight with the 23-year-old Ganey outside the student apartment complex on the SUNY Buffalo State campus. Officials say Kaba pulled out a box cutter and slashed Ganey at least three times.

Kaba was expelled from the college. Ganey has since graduated.
