ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A 12-year-old girl has earned bragging rights to catching a record-breaking fish in Lake Champlain.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says Amelia Whalen of Witherbee in Essex County caught a 29 pound, 14 ounce freshwater drum in June. It broke the previous state record for freshwater drum by more than 3 pounds.

DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos congratulated Amelia on her achievement on Thursday.

Freshwater drum are also called sheepshead and are easily identified by their pronounced blunt head. They're known to put up a good fight when hooked.

Amelia caught the drum with a Lazer Blade, a shiny metal lure that resembles a minnow.

A list of record fish caught in New York is on the DEC website (http://on.ny.gov/2bSkgyP ).
