New York, NY (WIBX) - The IRS says more than 6.8 million New Yorkers filed their 2010 federal income tax returns electronically as of April 21st.

IRS New York spokesperson Diane Besunder says that represents a nearly
16% increase over electronically filed returns for the same time period
last year.

New Yorkers have filed over 1.6 million income tax returns electronically through home computers, an increase of 15-percent over last year.

Besunder says IRS e-file is popular because it's fast, safe and accurate.

She says an electronically prepared return has an error rate of less than one-percent, compared to a rate of about 20% for paper returns.
