A call for blood has prompted the Newport Volunteer Fire Department and the West Canada Valley American Legion to join forces for a blood drive.

On February 26th, the groups will accept donations for the American Red Cross at the Newport Fire Station, starting at one in the afternoon.

160 blood drives have been canceled in eight states, resulting in a shortfall of about 6,600 units of blood and platelets.

To register to give blood during the event, call 1 (800) 733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org.
