ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Cynthia Nixon is backing Zephyr Teachout's campaign for New York attorney general.

The gubernatorial candidate and former "Sex and the City" star announced her endorsement for Teachout Wednesday in front of Trump Tower in Manhattan.

Teachout is a Fordham University law professor who made a surprisingly strong challenge to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2014. She has already announced her support for Nixon's campaign to unseat Cuomo in next month's Democratic primary.

Both women are liberal activists who say Albany needs new leadership. Teachout says that if elected she would investigate President Donald Trump and the Trump Foundation.

Teachout faces New York City Public Advocate Tish James, Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney and Buffalo attorney Leecia Eve in the Democratic primary for attorney general. The winner will face Republican attorney Keith Wofford.
