Congressman Richard Hanna is proclaiming New York's 22nd Congressional District the first "Purple Heart Congressional District" in the country.

The Congressman will preside over a ceremony on Thursday, November 7, 2013 where he will honor district members who were awarded the Purple Heart Medal.

The nation will observe Veteran's Day on Monday and the event is intended to serve also as an appreciation ceremony for all service members.  According to Hanna's office there are more than 58,000 veterans who call the Mohawk Valley home.

A host of local legislators are expected to participate in today's event along with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 944, the American Legion Post 1376 (New Hartford) Color Guard, and the family of the late Sergeant Thomas S. Cook of Hamilton, New York who gave his life in Vietnam.

The ceremony gets underway at 10:00am and the American Legion Post 1376 which is located at 8616 Clinton Street in New Hartford.
