NY Agencies Launch Review Of Nuclear Plant Oil Spill

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Two state agencies are launching a "comprehensive review" of an oil spill at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in suburban New York.

The Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Public Service announced the step Monday following direction from Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The agencies say an inspection this weekend turned up "rusted and broken" containment systems that could allow spills to reach the Hudson River.

An undetermined amount of oil spilled into a drainage canal leading to river on Friday. A spokesman for Indian Point owner Entergy says the oil was not radioactive and none was observed in the river. The spokesman says the spill happened after the cooling system for a turbine in a non-nuclear area of the plant malfunctioned.

Cuomo has called for the plant's closure.
