NY Elder-Deaths Suspect Was Attending Mental Health Court

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — A central New York man charged with the deaths of his 90-year-old grandmother and their 87-year-old landlord was enrolled at Utica's Mental Health Court at the time they were killed.

WSTM reports that Naythen Aubain was referred to the court in March 2018 after police say he tried to strangle his grandmother.

On Tuesday, he was arrested in the two women's deaths and said in court he "chopped" them up "in the name of the Lord."

Police discovered the body of Katerine Aubain at a park in Clayville late Monday. Some of the dismembered remains of the second victim, Jane Wentka, were found in her residence on Sunday; her head and torso were on a street.

Aubain's lawyer has said he expects a psychiatric defense. The judge ordered an evaluation.
