NY Grants To Help Protect Hudson River Watershed

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York has awarded more than $440,000 in grants for 10 projects to help communities protect water quality and habitats in the Hudson River watershed.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says they are intended to support local stewardship along the estuary that runs about 150 miles from the dam in Troy down to New York Harbor.

Among them, Rensselaer Land Trust will get $50,000 to recruit and train citizens to collect water samples at 18 sites in four streams and test for certain bacteria. The U.S. Geological Survey will help analyze and interpret data.

Riverkeeper will get $50,000 to support its community science water monitoring in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties that monitor fecal indicator bacteria and develop protocols to monitor algae and nutrients.
