ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York has allotted $50 million in grant funding for water quality projects on livestock farms in the state.

The money is part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's $2.5 Billion Clean Water Infrastructure Act. It's aimed at helping large livestock farmers make sure there's proper management and storage of nutrients, such as manure.

New York State has over 500 farms with more than 200 livestock, and most are dairy farms with 300 or more cows. Projects that get funded will help farmers meet new environmental requirements first announced in January.

The first of three application periods is currently open and closes Nov. 20. Grant awards will be made by mid-December.

An additional $15 million will be available in both 2018 and 2019.
