SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say they've charged a Syracuse man with illegally possessing a handgun that was used to accidentally kill his 8-year-old son last month.

Syracuse police say 44-year-old Jermaine Moore was arrested Tuesday on charges that include criminal possession of a weapon.

Police say Shaleek Carrears died early on the morning of Aug. 21 after being shot inside his family's home. Authorities say Shaleek's 10-year-old brother accidentally shot him with a handgun he found inside the house.

According to police records, the gun was stolen from a Syracuse firefighter's vehicle last year. The firefighter was fired in April after being charged with tampering with evidence when a local district attorney's investigator was charged in a man's hit-and-run death.

Moore is being held in jail pending his arraignment. It couldn't be determined if he has a lawyer.
