ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A Rochester man has been convicted of attempted murder for kidnapping a 74-year-old woman outside her suburban home after a bungled robbery attempt and pushing her into the Genesee River.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office says 62-year-old Franklin Leonard was also found guilty of kidnapping, robbery and menacing for a series of crimes that ended with the victim being rescued from the river in Rochester.

Authorities say Leonard tried to rob a realtors' office in the town of Gates at gunpoint in October 2015, then fled to a nearby home where he encountered a woman in her driveway. Leonard forced her into her car and drove into Rochester, where he stole her belongings and pushed her into the Genesee.

She screamed for help and was rescued by passers-by and firefighters.
