NY Police Chiefs Urge Cuomo To Expand Ride-Sharing Upstate

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The head of the state Association of Chiefs of Police has written to Gov. Andrew Cuomo requesting that he approve expansion of ride-sharing services in upstate New York to combat drunk driving.

The New York Daily News reports (http://nydn.us/2gT2nCt ) Cheektowaga Police Chief David Zack urged Cuomo to support legislation allowing companies such as Uber and Lyft to operate throughout the state.

Zack explained in the letter that the upstate region accounts for 51 percent of New York's licensed drivers but also 65 percent of the state's alcohol- and drug-impaired arrests and 59 percent of all fatal and personal injury crashes.

Cuomo has said in the past that he intends to seek a regulatory overhaul of the ride-sharing industry in New York.
