NY Senate GOP Leader Predicts Minimum Wage Hike Compromise

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Senate's Republican leader is declining to endorse the $15 minimum wage backed by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, saying the issue will be discussed in detail by his conference and predicting "some kind of compromise."

Sen. John Flanagan tells reporters Tuesday in the Capitol that Cuomo's administrative move to establish a phased-in $15 minimum wage for chain fast-food workers is "executive overreach."

His remarks followed a meeting of the Senate's majority Republicans behind closed doors while about 30 people demonstrated nearby in the Capitol for the higher wage.

New York's minimum wage is now $8.75 and is set to rise to $9 at year's end.

Flanagan says lawmakers returning next year have other issues to talk about like tax cuts, government spending and education aid.
