SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York State Fair opens its 12-day run, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on hand to make a pair of announcements.

The gates at the fairgrounds in the Syracuse suburb of Geddes open Thursday morning, with Cuomo scheduled to make an announcement at the main entrance. After touring the fairgrounds, Cuomo will make another announcement at the Empire Room at 10 a.m.

There's no word yet from the governor's office on what Cuomo will be discussing.

The fairgrounds have undergone a $50 million makeover that includes a new main gate, a larger midway and a new camping area for recreational vehicles.

Last year, more than 900,000 people visited the fair.

This year's fair runs through Labor Day, Sept. 5.
