ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York State Police officials say an investigator has died from an illness stemming from his work at the World Trade Center site after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

State Police Superintendent George P. Beach II announced Thursday that Investigator Paul Stuewer died Wednesday.

Beach says Stuewer was assigned to New York City to help with the search and recovery efforts after the 9/11 attacks brought down the twin towers in Lower Manhattan.

Stuewer served in the state police for 26 years. He served as a trooper in Poughkeepsie-based Troop K until being promoted to investigator in 2004. His most recent assignment was with the New York City Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Stuewer lived in Dutchess County. He's survived by his wife, their children and his parents. Funeral arrangements are pending.
