HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) — A telethon produced in memory of a slain New York college student has aired for the final time after having raised $72,000 for film students' projects.

Newsday reports (http://nwsdy.li/2oOPH75 ) that the Friends of Max Kolb telethon aired for the 16th and final time on Sunday night. It was started in 2002 by Laura Fu to raise money for Hofstra University film students' projects and to memorialize Max Kolb.

Kolb was a film student and close friend of Fu's who was killed by a classmate in 2001.

The telethon's ending coincides with the retirement of longtime advisor Peter Gershon, an associate professor who has been involved in the telethon's production since 2002.

The university will continue to oversee an endowed scholarship established in Kolb's name.
