ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is launching a new effort to help veterans who live in nursing homes.

The state announced Monday that it will hire veterans benefits advisers who will work inside nursing and assisted-living facilities. The advisers will work directly with veterans, their families and nursing home administrators to help veterans apply for disability compensation and other benefits.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state owes it to veterans to make sure they have help in claiming their benefits.

In 2015 advisers with the state's Division of Veteran's Affairs helped veterans and their families obtain more than $75 million in benefits.
