NY Village Mayor Accused Of Paying College With Public Money
MILLBROOK, N.Y. (AP) — A village mayor in the Hudson Valley has been accused of stealing $1,700 in government funds to pay off college loans.
The Poughkeepsie Journal reports (http://pojonews.co/2cSfwck ) that Village of Millbrook Mayor Laura Hurley was arrested on charges of stealing $1,700 from the Town of Washington in 2014 and 2015, when she was a bookkeeper for the town.
She was charged on Thursday with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and official misconduct, a misdemeanor.
Hurley's attorney told the newspaper it was a bookkeeping error in which she accidentally used a municipal account to pay for her daughter's school loans.
The Washington Town Council will meet for a special board meeting Tuesday in the aftermath of the charges.
Hurley is due back in court on Oct. 20.
