NY Volunteer Fire Fighters: Time To Check Smoke Alarms

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The organization representing New York's volunteer fire fighters is reminding residents to check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they're in working order.

The Fireman's Association of the State of New York on Thursday said the end of Daylight Savings Time this weekend is a good reminder to check the batteries in alarms. The group says that any alarms or detectors that are more than 10 years old should be replaced.

The association says that three of every five deaths attributed to a fire occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

A new law taking effect in 2019 will require all new smoke alarms sold in the state to contain non-removable 10-year batteries.
