NY Volunteers Wanted For Water Quality Surveys

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is recruiting volunteers to conduct water quality assessments this summer.

So-called WAVE monitoring helps DEC identify bodies of water in need and encourages residents to better understand the health of waterways where they live. Volunteers visit streams and rivers once and collect insects and other small organisms from the rocks and rubble at the bottom.

WAVE data are used to help the DEC's Stream Biomonitoring Unit, which samples streams and rivers across the state to create an inventory of water quality.

This year, WAVE training sessions are being offered in May at the Susquehanna River, Lake Champlain, and Atlantic Ocean/Long Island Sound basins.
