The Great New York State Fair is furthering a cause championed by Governor Andrew Cuomo during his Wine and Beer Summit held last year, by preparing to host its annual wine competition and tasting events.

Professional and amateur winemakers from across the state will be judged to see whose wine is best during two separate contests. Wines can be sent in by professionals until July 5th. Amateurs have a little more time, with a July 10 deadline.

Last year, 61 wineries submitted 365 bottles for judging, while 144 amateurs submitted nearly 500 bottles.

Winners will be selected in a variety of categories, with gold medals and double goal medals being given out based on quality.

Then in August, during the State Fair, a group of winery booths will allow tasters to judge the libations for themselves. The free event will be held in the International Building, where fair goers can learn about the types of wine available and how each type tastes.
