JENNINGS, Mo. (AP) — St. Louis County police say officers fatally shot a man after he pointed a rifle at them.

Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Schellman tells The Associated Press officers were called to a home twice Wednesday night by a woman who said an armed man was knocking on her door.

Schellman says that when officers came the second time, they saw the man leaving in a car. When the officers tried to make contact, the man sped up, striking a police car. He then ran away on foot.

During a foot chase, Schellman says the man turned toward officers and pointed the rifle at them. Schellman says officers then shot and killed the man.

Jennings is near Ferguson, Missouri, where the August shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old by an officer led to protests and unrest.
