South African Olympic runner and paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police say Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend.

It happened early this morning at Pistorius' home in Pretoria.

Local media reports say the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity, with Pistorius possibly believing the woman was an intruder.

Pistorius was born without a fibula in each leg.

He's a national hero in South Africa and made headlines around the globe when he became the first-ever double amputee to run in the Olympic Games in London last summer.

Pistorius is nicknamed "Blade Runner" because he races with carbon fiber prosthetic blades.
