It was just last year that a Real Estate firm in California called Herkimer one of the most unsafe places to live in New York State; now, a polling firm in Florida has given the village another blow.

Home Security Shield used FBI data from 2012 to show that the Village of Herkimer, per capita, is the 11th most unsafe town in New York State.  While 11th might not seem bad, the survey has Herkimer as more unsafe than the city of Utica, which placed 14th on the list.  The fact is, Herkimer is listed as more unsafe that Binghamton, Troy and Bath and here's the reason.  It's based on the FBI stats from 2012 which show that Herkimer reported 60 violent crimes as compared to similar villages like Ilion, Whitesboro and New York Mills, which are under 20.

The statistics provided by the FBI include categories like murder, rape and assault.  The numbers are based on 2012, which do not include statistics from the Herkimer Shootings which occurred in 2013.
