Authorities say one person died in a fiery tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 81 in Binghamton.

The collision happened Wednesday morning in the southbound lanes of the highway near the Broad Avenue exit.

Authorities say three tractor-trailers were involved in the crash, which happened a short distance north of the Kirkwood town line.

Binghamton assistant fire chief Mark Whalen said the incident was reported at 8:58 a.m. He said the Broome County emergency dispatch center received dozens of calls after the collision.

Whalen said there were rear-end collisions involving the three big rigs.

In addition to one of the drivers who died when the truck cab was engulfed in flames, Whalen said others were treated for minor injuries. He said no one was taken to a hospital from the scene.

Whalen said one of the trucks that was consumed by the fire was loaded with paper that was being transported to a recycling facility. He said one of the other trucks involved in the incident was hauling spaghetti sauce.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 81 reopened around 10:30 a.m. The southbound lanes remained closed into the afternoon for a police investigation.

The scene was a few miles southeast of a spectacular multiple-vehicle crash on Route 17 in Binghamton nearly two weeks ago.
