Oneida County Board Places Ban On Hydrofracking On County Owned Land

SOUTH MONTROSE, PA - JANUARY 18: Men with Cabot Oil and Gas work on a natural gas valve at a hydraulic fracturing site on January 18, 2012 in South Montrose, Pennsylvania. Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, stimulates gas production by injecting wells with high volumes of chemical-laced water in order to free-up pockets of natural gas below. The process is controversial with critics saying it could poison water supplies, while the natural-gas industry says it's been used safely for decades. While New York State has yet to decide whether to allow fracking, economically struggling Binghamton has passed a drilling ban which prohibits any exploration or extraction of natural gas in the city for the next two years. The Oneida County Board of Legislators voted this week to place a ban on hydrofracking on county owned land.

The ban wasn’t necessarily an urgent issue, as officials on the board say they have not been approached by the natural gas industry to inquire about fracking in Oneida County. Also, New York State has not given fracking the green light, as yet.

Republican legislator Dave Wood was among five who voted down the amendment, saying there is concern the ban would stifle any future debate. He also says there is good and bad with nearly all forms of energy.

Democrat Chad Davis was among those voting in favor of the ban.
