Utica, NY (WIBX) - Oneida County has received re-designation under the Military Air or MAP Program.

That means Griffiss Airport can continue to receive federal funding set aside for capital projects that are transforming former military facilities.

County Executive Anthony Picente says the designation will ensure the continued development of Griffiss International Airport as an integral part of economic development in the county.

The airport has been re-designated for five years through the 2016 federal fiscal year.

Meanwhile Picente has appointed a new Aviation Commissioner.

Picente has tapped Richard Gifford for the post.

The appointment needs to be approved by the Board of Legislators.
