Oneida County is making changes to its Senior Nutrition Program.

County Executive Anthony Picente says a new contract for the "Meals on Wheels" program will improve the quality of food, reduce waiting lists and restore daily hot meals.

Picente says the contract with Trinity Foods, which also provides food services for the County Jail, will save the county about $120,000 a year.  Trinity submitted a proposal for $7.35 per meal, which is 60 cents less than the $7.95 per meal cost by the current provider.

Picente said “This is what government should be doing. We didn’t wait for more money from the federal or state government. We worked together locally and solved the problem to the benefit of everyone.”

There are about 700 people in the county receiving home delivered meals.
