Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri has signed a law extending term limits for City officials from 8 to 12 years.

A public hearing on the issue was held Friday morning at Utica City Hall.  Nearly 20 Utica residents spoke at the hearing, calling on Palmieri to veto the law and put the issue up for a public referendum.

The law was approved by the Utica Common Council on September 20th by a 5-to-4 vote.

Councilman Bill Phillips was the only Councilman who voted in favor of extending term limits to attend today's hearing.

The current term limits were put in place in 1992.

The new law extending terms limits will take effect in 2019.
