Pennsylvania's cigarette tax is about to increase by a dollar a pack.

The state's tax will rise from $1.60 to $2.60 per pack starting August 1. The tax hike was approved by the legislature and signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf.

The increase was part of Pennsylvania's new budget package.

The additional tax is expected to raise $430 million in revenue for the state.

Even after the increase takes effect, the Pennsylvania cigarette tax will remain significantly lower than New York's tax. The New York tax of $4.35 per pack is the highest in the nation.

In addition to the cigarette tax hike, Pennsylvania will begin taxing other tobacco products, including pipe and smokeless tobacco. Pennsylvania is the last state in the nation to apply a tax to such products.
