Andy Pettitte (3-2) struck out ten while allowing just two hits in 7 1/3 innings as the Yankees hammered Tampa Bay 7-0 on Tuesday night to move within a half game of the Rays for first place in the A.L. East.

Russell Martin, who had three hits, provided all the runs New York needed with one swing, a fifth-inning grand slam off of Rays starter James Shields, show dropped to 6-4 on the season, and 0-2 in three starts vs. the Yankees.

Nick Swisher had New York's other RBI, along with two hits and Robinson Cano added a pair of base-knocks as well. New York's other runs came with the help of three Tampa Bay errors.

Freddy Garcia worked the final 1 2/3 innings for his first appearance in two weeks.
