Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente has vetoed legislation to allow for the sale of certain fireworks like sparklers in Oneida County.

Picente say he vetoed the law in the interest of public safety.

The Board of Legislators passed a local law last month that would permit the sale of sparklers around the Fourth of July and again around New Year’s Eve.  The vote was 18-to-5.

The Board will attempt to override the veto at its next meeting on July 13th.  It would take 16 votes to override the veto.

A number of fire officials had spoken out against the law at a public hearing.

35 counties have passed local laws to permit the sale of sparklers, including Herkimer and Madison.
