VIRGIL, N.Y. (AP) — State police say the motorist killed in a collision on a central New York interstate highway was a Long Island woman whose vehicle had run out of gas.

Troopers say a tractor-trailer was traveling north on Interstate 81 around 3:50 a.m. Wednesday when it slammed into a car that was stopped in the driving lane with the lights off in the Cortland County town of Virgil, 35 miles south of Syracuse.

Police say the only person in the car was 40-year-old Rashida Brown of Freeport in Nassau County. Troopers say they determined her car had just run out of gas when it was rear-ended by the truck.

She was taken to the hospital in nearby Cortland, where she died from her injuries.

Troopers haven't said if the 59-year-old Virginia man driving the truck was injured.
