ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — St. Petersburg police say a 5-year-old girl has died after being thrown from a bridge into Tampa Bay and a suspect believed to be her father is in custody.

Public information officer Yolanda Fernandez told The Associated Press that rescuers attempted to resuscitate the girl. She was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead early Thursday morning.

Fernandez said in an earlier statement that a police officer saw a person throw the girl in the water.

The officer was initiating a traffic stop of a speeding vehicle around midnight. Fernandez says the officer saw the driver stop on a bridge on the approach to the Sunshine Skyway and throw the girl.

The driver, who police say is believed to be the girl's father, was apprehended and is being questioned.

No identities were immediately released.
