CANTON, N.Y. (AP) — State police say they're investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy who apparently drowned in a northern New York creek.

Troopers say they responded around 1:15 p.m. Tuesday to a call reporting that Zephaniah Stewart had been missing for about a half hour from a home in Canton in St. Lawrence County.

By the time troopers arrived, the boy had been found unresponsive in a creek near the home. Troopers tried reviving the toddler before he was transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

The boy was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, where he later died from his injuries.

Troopers say an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.
