NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Police are investigating the first homicide of 2014 in the Hudson Valley city of Newburgh.

Authorities say a 36-year-old man was shot several times Monday afternoon. He was taken to the Newburgh campus of St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was not being released because police had not finished notifying his next of kin.

City police tell the Middletown Times Herald-Record they first learned of the shooting when they received a call that a car had struck a building used as a dormitory at Mount Saint Mary College.

Newburgh city police detectives and the Orange County District Attorney's Office are investigating.
