WEBB, N.Y. (AP) — Police in upstate New York say a man and a woman both died in separate snowmobile crashes over the weekend in the Adirondacks.

Webb police say 72-year-old Larry DeMarte, of Parma, failed to negotiate a curve on Sunday afternoon and flew off his vehicle into a creek. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports Demarte's snowmobile landed on top of him, trapping him underwater.

Authorities also say 46-year-old Michelle Wander crashed into a tree early Sunday while driving in an area between two lakes in Webb. Wander, of Clay, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say speed was a factor in both crashes.
