SARANAC, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say smoke inhalation killed a 60-year-old man who died during a fire set amid an armed standoff with police in northern New York last week.

State police say an autopsy conducted at the hospital in Plattsburgh determined Franklyn Miller died from smoke inhalation during the blaze at the home he owned in the Clinton County town of Saranac, in the northeastern Adirondacks.

Troopers say the manner of death has been ruled a suicide.

Police say troopers were called to the home late last Wednesday night for a report of a suicidal man. Troopers say Miller had barricaded himself inside and refused to surrender.

Around 6 a.m. Thursday, Miller fired a gun outside then retreated inside, where he continued firing after a blaze broke.

He was found dead inside the residence after firefighters extinguished the flames.
