MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (AP) — Police in Ohio say one of two young brothers found badly beaten at a motel has died.

The police chief in the city of Middletown confirmed the 5-year-old's death to the Hamilton-Middletown Journal-News (http://bit.ly/1SOOx1a ) on Friday.

Police allege adults beat the boys over a 22-hour span and injured them so badly that emergency responders were left in tears.

The boys' 26-year-old mother, a female friend and that woman's mother are jailed on charges of felonious assault and child endangering.

Maj. Mark Hoffman says investigators believe the boys were wrapped in sheets and beaten after one took food. Officers responding Wednesday to a 911 call found the younger boy with life-threatening injuries and his brother hurt, hidden under a blanket. Both were hospitalized.

The women's arraignment is Friday. It wasn't clear whether they have attorneys.
