BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) — Police have released the name of a woman found stabbed to death in the motel where she lived in western New York, in hopes of locating her next of kin.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office in a Wednesday news conference identified the victim as 58-year-old Sherri Colleen Butler. Her body was found Monday in a room at the Sunset Motel in Batavia.

Deputies say she had been living at the motel since January 2014 when she moved there from Rochester.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office has determined Butler died from a punctured carotid artery.

Investigators say they hope people who knew Butler will come forward to help them find relatives and determine who attacked her.
