Utica Police responded to St Elizabeth's Hospital early this morning for a suicidal person threatening to jump from the third floor of a parking garage.

Police managed to talk the 25 year old man off the ledge after about an hour and a half.

Officers say the man was highly intoxicated and distraught over a breakup with his girlfriend.

The man was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation.

UPD Chief Mark Williams wants to publicly acknowledge the actions of Lieutenant Charles Kelly and Sergeant Hiram Rios who he says showed great patience and compassion for this emotionally disturbed man and prevented a potentially tragic incident.
