Police Shoot, Wound Driver During Traffic Stop In Upstate NY

TROY, N.Y. (AP) — Police in an upstate New York city say an officer has shot and wounded a suspected parole violator during a traffic stop.

Troy Police Department officials say 22-year-old Dahmeek McDonald's vehicle was pulled over around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday after officers recognized him as a parole absconder.

Authorities say McDonald was shot twice in the torso during the confrontation. He's being treated at an Albany hospital. Officials say he's expected to recover.

Police haven't released details of what led to the shooting, which caused tensions between police and neighborhood residents.

Police say a warrant had been issued for McDonald's arrest. The Times Union of Albany reports that in 2016 he led police on a car chase from Troy to nearby Albany that ended in a crash. McDonald pleaded guilty to a drug charge.
