Pope Benedict XVI is officially no longer the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

After leading the Catholic faith for nearly eight years, Benedict, whose real name is Joseph Ratzinger, stepped down at 2 this afternoon, and is the first to resign from the position in more than 600 years.

The next step is for the Conclave of Cardinals to meet and choose his successor.
